WHAT ARE “ANNOTATED LAWS”?
They are selected laws of Fiji revised with full historical notes of any changes to that section of the text, value added case references and judicial comments, and pointers to other useful laws which cross-reference that law. These features help a lawmaker or user discern the purpose of the law, how the courts have interpreted various sections of the law, and point to other commentary or laws which discuss that section.
Often we are asked if this is duplication of the Revised Laws of Fiji. Our answer is no, those laws serve a different function. Our revision is beyond what Cap 6 requires of a revision. However, with no publication of the revised laws since 1985, our laws are the only ones which shed some light on the latest state of the laws. We are pleased to say we have made an impact on judicial activism, reduced judgment writing time, provided assistance to the judiciary in applying sentencing guidelines, broadened interpretation of sections of the law, assisted in drafting agencies understand the latest status of the law, opened discussion on copyright of the laws at universities and assisted the Attorney-General’s Chambers with a number of Corrigenda.
Current users - the judiciary, DPP, Legal Aid Commission, FICAC, major accounting firms, various statutory bodies, some commercial organisations, various law firms, an insurance firm and banks - find it a useful adjunct to their legal research. You cannot follow the rule of law unless you know what the rule is.
